HockeyTech and the University of Waterloo have teamed up to create a new annual awards program for the university’s varsity hockey players.
The program was announced Thursday (OCT. 8) by HockeyTech CEO Stu Siegel. Four Warriors — two male and two female — will each receive Athletic Financial Awards of $4,500.
HockeyTech’s $2,250 contribution per player will be matched by the university’s Department of Athletics and Recreation.
"We greatly value our partnership with the University of Waterloo and the R&D work we've been doing with the athletics department and hockey teams," Siegel said. "Providing AFA's is an honour for us to be able to make available to these incredible scholar athletes."
The awards program is another sign of HockeyTech’s commitment to the university and community. Earlier this year, HockeyTech and the University of Waterloo wired up the Columbia Lake Ice Field Athletic Centre with HockeyTech’s first player-tracking system.
The university uses the technology to measure players’ time on ice, speed and goals among about two million data points collected over a 60-minute game.
HockeyTech and the University of Waterloo recently participated in Doors Open Waterloo Region to show off the technology to the public. Later this month, Siegel and his staff will be on the ice to raise money and skate with some hockey stars as part of the Hockey Helps the Homeless tournament.
