Back in 1992, long before anyone had heard of the Internet of Things (IoT) or big data, two ex-ATS employees started a shiny new software company called PEER Group. Mike Kropp and Bob Harris were working on interconnected software objects that represented machines and communicated as peers. Without knowing it, their company became a forerunner in the Industrial IoT (IIoT).

Twenty-five years later, PEER Group’s automation software runs in some of the largest smart factories in the world, enabling smart manufacturing in the semiconductor, PV, LED and other high-tech industries. Our software connects highly-automated equipment to other equipment, machines to factory systems, and factories to other factories. We collect big data, store big data, package it up and make it available for predictive analytics.

While factory automation software isn’t exactly sexy, PEER Group is fairly confident its software impacted your life today. It runs in world-class facilities where they make billions of integrated circuits that power all of the smart devices on the planet. Your cell phone has a chip in it that was probably touched by PEER Group software at some point during its production.

PEER Group is located in the heart of Kitchener’s Innovation District. We employ 135 people (over 100 locally and the rest in Dresden, Germany). In early February, we celebrate our 25th anniversary and to commemorate our silver jubilee, we’re giving a shout out to all of our employees – present and past – for their contributions to our ongoing success. We’d also like to recognize the innovation and ingenuity that surrounds us in this vibrant tech-focused community.
