Canada: The Open Data Report ODX
There's so much to love about being Canadian and living in our beautiful home and native land. On Canada's birthday, let's look at the open data behind the many Canadian things that make our hearts glow and exude true patriot love.
The People
Canada has the 38th largest population but the 10th largest economy in the world with 35.2 million Canadians living far and wide, coast-to-coast, as of 2016.
Almost 5% of Canadians identified as Indigenous in the 2016 Census. That's 1.7 million people!
Canada is a multicultural place. We're home to 254 different ethnicities.
The Land
Mount Logan, in the St. Elias Mountains, Yukon, is the highest mountain in Canada at 5,959 m tall.
Canada is the second largest country in the world with a land mass of 9,984,670 square kilometers.
From its furthest source to its ultimate overflow, the Mackenzie River, Northwest Territories, is Canada's longest river, measuring 4,241 km. This also makes it the 13th longest river in the world!
The Identity
With more than 150 species of maple trees known around the world, only 10 are native to Canada. These are Sugar Maple, Black Maple, Mountain Maple, Bigleaf Maple, Red Maple, Douglas Maple, Vine Maple, Manitoba Maple, Silver Maple, and Striped Maple.
Maple syrup is a Canadian staple. In 2016, there were a total of 46,995,360 maple taps across the country.
Candians love salmon! 121,926 tonnes of salmon were produced in 2015 worth a total of $669 million.
1.8 out of every 100 Canadians are ice hockey players, making Canada the nation with the highest participation rate in the world.
Those 631,295 ice hockey players have 8,300 Canadian ice rinks to practice on, double the number of any other nation.
