Communitech acquires Briefed.in, adds Chief Business Development Officer

Data platform and key C-suite hire increase bench strength for Canada’s leading innovation hub

KITCHENER, ONT., September 15, 2022 — Communitech has acquired Briefed.in, a data platform that tracks investment in Canadian technology companies.

Through this acquisition, Communitech has strengthened the data engine behind its True North Strategy to identify and support Canada's highest-potential companies - and supercharged its founder-focused programs with the power of real-time insights

“Like Communitech, Briefed.in was built by founders, for founders,” said Chris Albinson, CEO and president at Communitech. “Through this acquisition, we’re not only collecting the right data from startups across the country - we’re grounding the vital support that we provide to Canadian founders in robust analytics.”

Briefed.in, by Communitech, will continue to provide timely insights on the Canadian technology ecosystem for entrepreneurs, investors and innovators alike through newsletters, insights and trend reports. The platform will also remain focused on generating awareness for and championing the world-class tech organizations that call Canada home.

“Briefed.in was started based on a community need and its growth is evidence of our country's passion for the success of Canadian technology startups,” said Rob Darling, Co-Founder and former CEO of Briefed.in. “I am thrilled about the impact Briefed.in has had to date, so I am excited that this acquisition of the Briefed.in platform will strengthen Communitech’s abilities for the True North Strategy and their overall mission to support Canadian technology startups.”

The acquisition of Briefed.in isn’t the only increase to Communitech’s bench strength. The innovation hub has also added Malcolm MacGregor to its leadership team, in the role of Chief Business Development and Partnerships Officer.

MacGregor brings extensive experience in sales, client services, business development and marketing. Prior to joining Communitech, he held various executive and C-level positions at world-leading organizations such as Sapient, Microsoft, Deloitte Digital and CGI.

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of a great Canadian success story, poised in the heart of Canada's innovation economy, while learning from the team that has elevated the Communitech brand and business,” said MacGregor. “Working on bringing something like the True North Strategy to life and supporting Canada’s tech ecosystem on its journey to owning the podium on the world stage is a dream come true.”

In this newly created role, MacGregor will be responsible for supporting Communitech’s mission of helping Canadian tech companies start, grow and succeed by fostering connections between founders and key corporate partners.
